WWF Competition for 2009-2010 Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship: World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has issued a call for applications for the 2009-2010 Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Fund Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship. The Fuller Fellowship offers scientists the opportunity to link their post-doctoral research to on-the-ground conservation work at WWF sites.

The 2009-2010 Fuller Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship will be awarded to an early career scientist addressing the following research topic: "How do different biofuel throughputs compare against credible performance levels?" The Fellowship will be awarded on the basis of applicant´s ability, accomplishments, and potential to become a leader in his/her field.

Complete applications must be received by 5 p.m. EDT October 20, 2008. Further details are available at www.worldwildlife.org/science/fellowships/fuller/postdoctoral.html.

"The Fuller Post-Doctoral Fellowship is essential to WWF´s belief that effective conservation is science-based," says Andrea Stauffer, Program Officer, Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Fund. "This research will ask and answer the difficult questions necessary to understand what sustainability really looks like in biofuels. With these answers, we can and will make the best decisions about how to move forward."

This year´s recipient of the 2008-2009 Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship is Dr. Trond Larsen. As a Fuller Fellow, Dr. Larsen works with WWF and Princeton University to develop science-based conservation strategies in the Andes-Amazon region using ecologically important dung beetles as a model system. In addition to determining the protected area needs of invertebrates, Dr. Larsen is also investigating the impacts of changing land-use and illegal hunting associated with the developing interoceanic highway in Peru, as well as assessing the vulnerability of species to climate change along Andean elevational gradients.

The Fuller Fellowship is one of four components of the WWF Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Fund, launched in 2006 to honor Kathryn Fuller, president and CEO of World Wildlife Fund from 1989 to 2005. The fund aims to foster the next generation of scientists, support the most promising research in conservation science, and put it into practice in the field.
